Last January

The white blanket over my yard was a thin layer turned
thick overnight. Our childhood wonder, long thought
ashed, saying hello. For no other reason, I sit

in the dark of my brother’s car, watching
as he frees the windows from icy
sheaths. He doesn’t need me

for his simple errand. We just want to look
at the winter kingdom of Baltimore. Snow stretching
over every roof and sidewalk. People pulling

hoods over hair. After a green Christmas, I didn’t expect
this. Heat will return too soon, I know, but I hope
it won’t.
